The Trusting Soul
Ron Clary is a lawyer with a practice in Canoga Park. He writes trusts--hence the title. His blog is easier to read than his professional work product.

Here's what I know about Senator Larry Craig:
Craig is reconsidering his guilty plea. Apparently, acting as your own lawyer and admitting that you did odd things in an airport bathroom has a negative effect on your political image. Was this a surprise to him?
Senator Larry Craig claims he is not gay. We know this because he held a nationally televised news conference to proclaim this fact. When a Republican senator has to do this, it does not rest well with his core constituents.
Senator Larry Craig should have someone go with him to the bathroom as a witness.
Senator Craig used to sing in a quartet with three other Republican senators. Their records didn't sell well.
Senator Craig has served in Washington for 27 years.
A lot of the people Senator Craig served with, including those in his own party, think it is just a terrific idea that he resign. They are not pleased that he is thinking about staying.
Here's what I don't know about Senator Larry Craig:
His significant achievements as an elected representative. Why I should care whether he goes or stays? Nobody is talking about the negative effect of losing Larry Craig on our nation's governance.
We live in a world where you can drive a car off a bridge and leave a girl to die in it, stay in the Senate for about as long as Larry Craig has served, and be regarded by many as a leader.
This one misdemeanor bust apparently cancels whatever positive can be said about Senator Craig's service.
One guilty plea, and Larry Craig becomes expendable.
If I were Craig, I'd leave out of embarrassment.

I have a feeling if each of our histories were open books to be accessed for public opinion, most of us could be embarrassed and even shamed by something we've done in the past. In a world that seemingly says, "Anything goes," and celebrities are richly rewarded for atrocious behavior, I often wonder who decides whom gets a pass from the media and who gets clobbered. I'm assuming Craig is getting very rough treatment because he is (was?) a United States Senator and is expected to be a shining example for the rest of us. If so, then - as the blog above states - each senator should be held to the same high standards.
