The San Fernando Valley Green Party chapter hosted a successful event at Tia Chucha's Coffeehouse and Bookstore Saturday, August 26th, 2007. Candidates running under the Green party participated and were warmly received by a capacity audience.
Donna Warren
, Lt. Governor candidate gave a rousing speech. Her topic centered around the unfairness of the the three strike law and she is working to repeal this legislation.
Ricardo Costa
, running for Assembly in the Pasadenta/Altadena area gave his support ot congressional candidate,
Byron De Lear
. The featured speaker of the evening was
Nativo Lopez
, statewide President of the Mexican-American Political Association, who has endorsed Byron de Lear for Congress. He said that the Green Party and immigration movement have much in common, he said that as a registered Green Party member, he believes that both movements have strengthened one another.
" One thing is certain, the Democratic Party is not the answer for Latinos, many newly registered Latinos have opted not to join either political party, they are registering " Decline to State' because they recognized that neither the Republican Party nor the Democratic party has introduced legislation which will truely resolve the immgration crisis. The Democrats under Senator Kennedy and supported by the Catholic Church, labor leaders such as the Farmerworkers Union have endorsed a bill which promoted the "Guest Worker Program", Nativo stated" When has the United States ever treated Mexican workers as Guests", instead Lopez said that a Guest worker program will only be used as slave labor in the fields and factories. Nativo said that what he and other progressive immigration activists are proposing is to have a poll of undocumented workers to determine what they want as legislation, something that both leaders of the major poltical parties have failed to ask."If the United States wants undocumented workers, then they must give these workers all the rights accorded to other workers," A Tide rises all boats. Mr. Lopez remarks were well received by the Greens present.
