I own and operate American Hapkido's Li'l Dragons program for ages 3-6 in Moorpark and participated in the Country Days Parade and Street Fair last Saturday.

As their instructor, I have to say how proud I am of these 3-,4- and 5-year-olds as they sat in the bed of our Li'l Dragons truck, while it rained off and on, for almost two hours before and during the parade.

I was concerned about their comfort and patience level. However, much to my surprise and delight, they were far too excited about being in the parade to let a little rain discourage them.

These little ones inspired me as they turned their faces upwards to soak up every drop of rain they could, their smiles shining like the sun on an otherwise cloudy day.

If only we adults could remember more often to focus on the joy, especially on those days when a little rain falls in our lives.

I was so proud of the level of patience and determination they demonstrated, as well as the mutual respect and manners shown to their parents and fellow classmates, while stuck in the back of my pickup.

In class, it's easy to see the skills they are learning regarding balance, kicking and punching, but outside the classroom is where the true focus of martial arts are visible in the things that really count.

Good character, being considerate of others and perseverance -these are what really matter.

Props to these Li'l Dragons and their parents. You made my day.

Just as I am your role model ... you are also mine!
