Students perform 'Tire Tracks and Broken Hearts'
Contributed by: Joshua Godinez   on 5/5/2008

Well, Pacoima Middle School's musical theater group finally did its big show of the year, called "Tire Tracks and Broken Hearts."

The title was lifted from a lyric in one of the songs performed. My daughter, Cassandra, said that was a Meatloaf song. Who knew?

This is Cassandra's first year performing in the big show. Pacoima serves students in sixth through eighth grades. It has a performing arts magnet as well as serving all of the local families. Cassandra goes there as part of the magnet.

In sixth grade, the kids are exposed to all of the performing arts specialties and then they select one in which to delve further. Cassandra has been taking dance lessons since she was 2, and plans to be a dance instructor when she's an adult, so it made sense that she would go into the dance specialty.

However, her training at the Gotta Dance Studio in Granada Hills is more advanced than the training she would have received at Pacoima.

She also has a good ear and is a quick study for lyrics and melodies. So, she decided to go into the musical theater group instead, so that she could grow in that area.

The sixth-grade kids have their own mixed show with the different production groups, but can't participate in the big shows because those take all year to prepare.

Now that Cassandra is in the seveth grade, she has been working on this big show all year as well as preparing for the various performances and competitions in which the Pacoima singers participate.

Cassandra played more of a supporting role in this production. Although she has a lovely voice and is a good dancer, she still has to find a way to let go on stage so that she really emotes.

Still, she's a good performer and was especially good at the spoken part where she is interviewing the grandma character.

She had a solo during the "Mary Poppins" medley. Of course, I wanted to see more of her because she's my daughter.

The show overall was decent. There was one girl, Sydney, who really stole the show. She had such a great singing voice and was featured during the "Wedding Singer" part of the show.

Cody, who was pictured in a recent edition of the Daily News, by the way, was as flamboyant and entertaining as he always is and fit in especially well with the Burt character in the "Mary Poppins" medley.

Pacoima Middle school has a number of performances during the year. If you ever get a chance, go there because they tend to be good, especially the musical theater show in May.

Sorry, their run is over. So if you missed them, you'll have to wait until next year. Well, maybe you can see them perform on stage. There is supposed to be one more show at Magic Mountain this year. I'll keep you updated.
