Two local Eagle Scouts honored
Contributed by: Joshua Godinez   on 4/25/2008

Brian Sears and Trevor Fulham have now been publicly recognized with the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.

Both had to demonstrate leadership and perform a community service worthy of the rank they were trying to attain. On April 20, both were honored in a joint ceremony at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Granada Hills.

Trevor actually attained his Eagle rank two years ago with a project in the back country of Lake Piru removing non-native, invasive plant species from the creeks that feed into the lake.

This was dirty, difficult work that wasn't even in a convenient location. All of the participants had to backpack into the area just to have the joy of weeding out the tamarisk that was killing off native California plants.

Trevor was also the senior patrol leader of Troop 104, Mission Hills, at the time.

Trevor now works at Adventure 16, a camping and sports supply store.

Sears demonstrated his leadership as a patrol leader in Troop 104 and ceremony leader for his Order of the Arrow chapter. The chapter performs ceremonies for other Boy Scout units for special occassions such as rank advancement and annual celebrations.

For his service project, Brian spent two years cleaning, researching and labeling artifacts at the San Fernando Mission, where Brian attends Mass. His project was doctoral in its scope and did include the work of college professors to correctly identify and explain the hundreds of artifacts that are on public display.

Thousands of Valley students will see them as they visit the mission on school field trips.

The ceremony honoring these two is called a Court of Honor. This Eagle Court of Honor was well attended with officials from the western Los Angeles County Council, past and present members of Troop 104, friends, family, and even the monsignor from the San Fernando Mission.

It's been a long time coming for Trevor, who was too modest or shy to allow others to honor him, but through the persisent efforts of Mary-Alice and Don Sears, both Brian, their son, and Trevor finally received the public honors due to them.

Congratulations to both of them. It has been an honor for me to work with them. Our country is a better place for having them in it.
