Blog Entry 24 of 31 Musings, Ramblings and Scout Stuff
This blog is generally about what is piquing my interest at the moment which will probably be Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, or politics.

Parents Night Out

That's the title of Girl Scout Troop 1328's monthly babysitting service. The event is being held in Mission Hills at an in-home daycare facility making it convenient for the girls to use equipment in their fund-raising venture.

While many of the girls would probably do it for free because of the novelty of the experience, Troop 1328 is actually doing this as a fundraiser for their 2009 summer trip to Washington D.C. I tried to talk them into charging more, but my wife, Cici, seems to feel that the $5 per hour price tag is adequate. I guess because the timeframe is limited: only on the dates they've selected from the hours of 6pm to 11pm, there is an argument to be made for that. However, the kids watched by the Girl Scouts are being given a full meal, activities, and arts and crafts. I thought that deserved some extra cash.

If you add to that the fact that the girls have attended a Red Cross class to be certified in baby sitting and that there are adults in attendance who are accreditted in both child First Aid and CPR for both children and infants, I think my argument that $10 per hour would have been perfectly acceptable is stronger.

No, though. They're keeping it to $5 per hour with a two hour minimum. They raisedalmost $200 for their first event which was held on April 11th. Mostly, these were friends and other Girl Scout families who were grateful for a night all to themselves while feeling secure in where their kids were being watched. Since the girls are only 11 through 14 years of age they are watching other kids who are 10 or younger.

The girls did have fun, though. Even changing poopy diapers and dealing with their friends' siblings wasn't enough to dampen their spirits.

The Girl Scouts council office in the valley can typically refer those who are interested to a certified baby sitter who is also a Girl Scout. The council offers Red Cross training as part of their annual program and the event is typically swamped with girls who are interested in earning extra money and feeling confident about their ability to do so.

Troop 1328 is certainly doing that. Hopefully, we'll earn enough money to defray the tens of thousands of dollars it will cost us to send participating families to the east coast next year.
