This blog is generally about what is piquing my interest at the moment which will probably be Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, or politics.

I'm Singing in the Snow doesn't have the same ring

However, the musical theater group from Pacoima Middle School, formally known as The Pacoima Singers, will be performing in Vancouver up in the Great White North at the end of May so "Singing in the Rain" wouldn't work as well.

Each family raises money to send their kid to the annual trip, but we also do fundraisers. We had two recently at a church in Sunland and at Skateland in Northridge.

For the first, the group performed its act and raised $3,000. The second was mostly attended by the families themselves, but the kids got to bond in the roller skating rink and we added another $500 into the kitty.

The group typically gets families, individuals and businesses to sponsor them. Between individual contributions, fundraisers and sponsors, the Pacoima Singers has raised over $20,000 to pay for the trip, but still need to raise more.

My daughter, Cassandra, is in this group and while I've come to learn that the performing arts crowd she's in can be particularly dramatic and loud, she's having a good time while getting her education.

She's performed for her school a number of times, for the Sherman Oaks street fair, and at Forest Lawn. Her 10-year training in dance and a talent for memorizing lyrics has helped her earn a spot in the front row.

The Pacoima Singers is an All-American kid pop ensemble, but they also like to throw in modern musicals in their repertoire. They're currently learning "Mary Poppins," which is apparently a musical on Broadway now.

"Legally Blonde" and "The Wedding Singer" are movies that are reportedly musicals now, too. They've been added into the mix.

I was planning on going with my daughter to Vancouver, but it's a bit pricey and adults have to pay their own way. We pooled my contributions into her account and called it macaroni or at least enough to get her to Washington.

The Pacoima Singers. Really. If you ever get a chance to hear them perform, you'll feel like you've been spiritually transported to the 60s when glee clubs were still around and parents still nudged each other and said, "That's my kid". It's great fun.
