Oh, no! Girl Scout cookie sales are ending!
Contributed by: Joshua Godinez   on 3/26/2008

Or, as the adults say, thank goodness the cookie sales are ending.

Of course, the girls have a great time hanging out with each other and putting on their best innocence demeanor for customers exiting grocery stores, video stores, and banks.

They hear "No, thanks" about 10 or20 times before they hear, "Sure, I'll buy some", and that's enough. It's enough for some of the girls to earn as much as two hundred dollars that they will use toward future scouting activities.

Troop 1328, Mission Hills, had a banner year. It started out slow. Personal sales were off about 20 percent, giving a personal testimonial to the rumor that the economy was slowing down.

My wife and I, as organizers of the cookie sales, for our troop were disappointed, but resigned. Our girls are saving up to go to Washington D.C. in 2009 so the more they sell, the easier it is for them to get there.

So, we were disappointed that we couldn't earn more for their scouting savings accounts, but we figured that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Then, the girls and parents decided that they were going to double down on direct sales in front of stores.

Some days we were boothing in front of three different locations. If you went to Ralphs, Vons, Rite Aid, Washington Mutual, or Blockbuster in Mission Hills, chances are you bought cookies from a Girl Scout in Troop 1328.

We even went out to Albertsons and Blockbuster in Granada Hills.

Putting in hundreds of hours, the girls met and surpassed our troop goal of 300 boxes per person which was very ambitious when we proposed it. The Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley has various sales levels at which they give the girls prizes.

It's usually something cheap, but cute and definitely appreciated by the girls. The big sales level is 500 boxes. Only a few dozen Girl Scouts out of the thousands in the San Fernando Valley ever reach that level.

This year, our troop has six girls who hit that or surpassed that mark including, you know it's coming, wait for it... wait for it... my daughter, Cassandra! Six girls represent more than a third of our troop!

The Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley council will be having a 500+ event at Mountasia to publicly recognize these super achievers. The council and girls both benefit from the sale of each box.

Additionally, we solicit purchases of cookies for charity. Troop 1328 will be taking about 50 boxes of cookies that kind-hearted people have purchased for the clients of MEND (Meet Every Need with Dignity), which provides food and clothing for those in need.

Other troops solicit purchases for our soldiers overseas who have reported that they don't care how melted or broken the cookies are when they arrive. Everyone loves Girl Scout cookies!

The cookie sales end on March 30. I'm sure you'll still be able to find a stray troop here and there with some left over and the Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley should have many, many boxes available at the council office ( http://www.sfvgsc.org/newsite/pages/contact.htm) in Chatsworth at the corner of Winnetka and Plummer.

Troop 1328, however, has closed its books for this year. We've already started our clock. Only 10 more months until cookie season!

Thanks, Jackie and Pam! Those yummy coconut ones are called Samoas here in the Valley. You know if you call the council (818-886-1801) they'll tell you where you can find girl scouts selling cookies this weekend. They maintain a list of all requests to sell cookies in front of stores. Of course, you could go to the council to buy the cookies, but then you miss the fun of putting a smile on a girl's face. Good luck finding your Samoas!

Great job! Congratulations to Cassandra and troop 1328. I actually didn't see that many Girls Scouts selling cookies this year!! Boo hoo. I always buy whereever I see their cardtables set up. I still want some of those yummy coconut, chocolate striped ones (forget the name). I hope it's not too late to find some today or tomorrow!!
