Blog Entry 2 of 3 Hello, from the heart of the Valley

There are so many stories to be told in the San Fernando Valley. I love hearing them and sharing them with others. There are the community heroes who volunteer countless hours to make the Valley a better place. There are brave souls who face adversity a great attitude. There are seniors who remember our history and have tips on how to not repeat the mistakes. With my blog, I want to let those folks say hello. They truly are the 'heart' of the Valley.

Fireworks a hit in Studio City

The evening skies over Studio City lit up on July 4, when the Studio City Chamber of Commerce sponsored its annual evening of music, food and fireworks.

The event is held in a great location - the CBS lot off Radford Avenue. Not only did you get to see buildings used as exteriors for TV shows, you got to see magic shows and watch model airplane demonstrations on sound stages.

The crowd was entertained by a Summer of Love tribute band and Paperback Writer, a Beatles tribute band. Folks got up and danced in front of the stage at times.

The event was a great way to show your patriotism and there were several people who wore some pretty creative outfits with a red-white-and-blue theme.

The food court was full of people enjoying either full dinners or a hot dog with chips. Everything went pretty well at the food booth, though it did get a bit congested with people in the area where you picked up your orders. And it's always funny when they have someone with a soft voice calling out customers' names. Everyone was so hungry, though, that even one young woman's near whisper got the attention of the customer being called.

There was also a business fair with chamber members operating booths to share information about themselves. My partner, Jeff, was with me. His sister, Judy, went up to a booth to get information about an accupuncturist in Studio City. Coincidentally, it's also the office where Jeff's chiropractor works. What a small world!

In one of the sound stages, members of the Black Sheep Exhibition Squadron had model airplanes on display and were demonstrating how they fly. It's amazing how much control they had when sending the small planes into flight. The flyers looped and swooped, much to the delight of everyone watching. The best part: kids got to make their own gliders and take them home.

Finally, at around 8:15 p.m., the crowd started shifting to a location just south of the new CBS-2, KCAL-9 studios. It was a tight squeeze, but everyone made room for everyone else.

After a choir from North Hollywood High School beautifully sang the "Star-Spangled Banner," the fireworks began at 9 p.m. Judging from the "ooos" and "aaaahs," they were a big hit.
