Santa Clarita Rotarians Visit Beijing, China
Contributed by: Connie Ragen Green on 11/15/2008

During a trip sponsored by the local Chamber of Commerce, two Santa Clarita Rotary Club members, along with a member from the Glendale Rotary Club, visited a Rotary Club in Beijing, China.

Rotarians Ed Bolden, Connie Ragen Green, and Chuck Reinhart were able to visit the club in Beijing. China has only allowed Rotary to be active since 2006, after more than 50 years of the international service organization having to go underground due to government regulations. There are only two chartered Rotary Clubs in China, one in Shanghai and the other in Beijing.

The visit to the club only occured after the three Rotarians were allowed to leave the tour group in order to deviate from the schedule. Once at the hotel where the meeting is held, they were welcomed warmly by the Beijing Club.

Chinese citizens are not permitted to become members of Rotary, so the club consists of people visiting China, as well as those living and doing business in the country who are citizens of countries from around the world.

The highlight of the meeting was when Rotary Past District 5260 Governor Ed Bolden exchanged banners with the President of the Beijing Rotary Club, as part of a tradition dating back almost one hundred years.
