The award-winning Hart High School cheerleaders are sponsoring a drive for Cell Phones For Soldiers.
Old phones collected are sent to the nonprofit organization Cell Phones For Soldiers, which then recycles them for cash. The proceeds are used to buy prepaid calling cards for our soldiers serving overseas.
The organization was started by two teenagers,
Brittany
and
Robbie Bergquist
of Norwell, Mass. After hearing about a soldier who had a huge phone bill, the teens decided to take action. They began collecting cell phones and started Cell Phones for Soldiers.
Since then, the organization has distributed more than 400,000 prepaid calling cards to our soldiers.
The Hart cheerleaders collected 140 cell phones last year and hope to collect even more this year.
Phones can be dropped off at Hart home football games at College of the Canyons, in the Hart Hight School administration office, located at 24825 N. Newhall Ave., Newhall, or at the office of KHTS-AM 1220, located at 27225 Camp Plenty Road, Unit 8, Santa Clarita.
The phones will be collected until the end of the year. In January, the cell phones will be mailed to Cell Phones For Soldiers and recycled to pay for the calling cards for our soldiers.
With this drive for old cell phones, the Hart cheerleaders are helping our troops keep in touch with their families and friends. Not only are the phones being kept out of landfills, but we providing the ability for our soldiers to call home free while serving our country overseas.
