The Hart High School cheerleaders cheered on the athletes at the Special Olympics cycling event, which took place on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Saugus Speedway.
There were 67 athletes, ages 14 to 60, competing in a variety of races. Members of theSpecial Olympic cycling teams were from Santa Clarita Valley, East San Gabriel, Kern County, Santa Barbara, Orange County, South Bay and Western San Bernadino.
This was the sixth annual cycling event, which was started by coach
Scott Gesin
in 2003. A popular coach and the Coach of the Year in 2004, Gesin was at the event encouraging all the athletes and thanking the many volunteers.
Unfortunately, this was also the last cycling event at the speedway because Southern California Special Olympics has removed cycling as one of its sports due to the economic climate.
The Hart cheerleaders were stationed in groups along the track cheering and encouraging the athletes. In spite of the hot weather, the cyclists put in their best efforts to finish their races. Their enthusiasm showed as they rode their bikes around the track. Everyone who participated in this event left feeling like a winner.
The Hart cheerleaders have made an effort to be active in the community by volunteering at events such as the Boys & Girls Club's A Day For Kids on Sept. 20 and Santa Clarita Valley Park & Recreation's flag football kick-off on Sept. 3. This was their second year to cheer at this cycling event.
The Hart cheerleaders plan to continue to give back to the community throughout the year.
Special Olympics offers year-round sports opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities from ages 8-80.
