The summer programs at the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley will begin June 9, 12, and 16 at the Newhall, Val Verde and Sierra Vista locations, respectively.
New students, ages 7-17, can enroll in the club at any time for $24 a year. Participants will have access to all programs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. An extended care program - from 7-11 a.m. - is available to all children at $10 a day.
A typical summer day will begin with breakfast, followed by reading time, games, and activities in the gym, art center and playground.
After lunch, youth will take part in sports, field trips and other special programs. Through the Santa Clarita Valley Food Services Program, the club will provide breakfast and lunch to all participants.
Sports unique to the summer include co-ed teen soccer, teen girls basketball, and indoor baseball (ages 7-13).
Through the digital arts program, children 10 years and older will use Macintosh computers to make movies, from writing the script and creating the storyboard to adding music and special effects.
Through the computer club, students, ages 7-10, will learn office program skills, as well as publishing and photo editing.
"Our summer programs offer youth a wide variety of activities to engage them in fun, keep them physically active, and continue to challenge their minds," said
Matthew Nelson
, branch manager for the Newhall facility. "At a $24-a-year membership, there is no better deal to keep young people involved in positive activities."
The Newhall facility will embrace a summer theme of "Time Travel," beginning with dinosaurs, the ice age, ancient (Egyptians), Medieval times, Gold Rush, the 1960s-1970s space race, 1980s, and the future. Special events will include a fashion show, outdoor games, a disco dance and a reading program.
Thanks to scholarships provided by the Los Angeles Times, 14 club members will have the chance to attend Camp Gilmore, operated by The Salvation Army in Malibu Canyon, for a nominal fee. There are two sessions available - July 9-14 for children ages 8-12 and Aug. 6-11 (a non-traditional sports camp) for 9- to 13-year-olds.
Throughout the summer, students will also enjoy in a variety of field trips that include amusement parks, zoos, the beach, ice skating, deep-sea fishing and sporting events.
Some club participants will gain work experience as part of the city of Santa Clarita's Youth Employment Services. This program pays for teenagers, 14-18 years old, to work at various locations around the city, including retailers, community centers and nonprofits such as the Boys & Girls Club.
The job sites train and supervise the workers. For many of them, it will be their first paid job. The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley will have a total of four workers.
Anyone interested in participating in the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley summer programs should call the location nearest them: Newhall (661-254-CLUB), Sierra Vista (661-251-6017) or Val Verde (661-257-4021).
The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley is a member of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, an organization with more than 3,000 clubs nationwide. The local Club was formed in 1968 by a group of community leaders who recognized the need for high-quality programs and facilities at affordable costs for area young people.
The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley now serves more than 3,500 youth, ages 7-17, at facilities in Newhall, Canyon Country and Val Verde.
Programs engage members in education and career exploration, the arts, sports, recreation and fitness, character/leadership development and healthy life choices.
