It was a moment unlike any other in the team's short history together. In what can only be described as a nail-biting finish, the Valencia High color guard team was awarded the silver medal in the Regional A division at the recent Winter Guard Association of Southern California championships held in Lake Forest.
Perhaps even more remarkable was the fact that 10 of the 12 team members had never tossed a flag, rifle or saber until the start of last fall's Pride of the Vikings marching band season a few months earlier. For such a young team, the chance of medaling seemed like a long shot. Long hours of daily practice under the artistic direction of choreographer
Pedro Montenez and assistant
Chelsea Hassen enabled the color guard team to see their skills improve and their technique perfect in the weeks leading up to championships.
During the competitive season, the young team found themselves consistently placing in the top three during competitions and invitationals held in Little Rock, West Covina, Azusa and Cerritos. The color guard hosted Viking Challenge in March, performing in exhibition.
The high energy of the color guard's routine helped their performance stand out among a large field of competitors. Performing to the song
S.O.S. (Rescue Me) by Rihanna the theme revolved around "Women at Work". Complete with white coveralls, bright yellow hardhats, and a floor mat painted with an oversized orange construction sign, the routine scored high marks in originality.
Valencia High science teacher and color guard advisor
Sue Peterson commended the squad on their achievement citing the hard work and tireless efforts put forth as a leading factor in their success.
