Singing siblings take top prizes in talent show
Contributed by: Jaci Hoffman on 4/29/2008

The young boy and girl had small frames, but commanding voices, in the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley talent show held April 26 at the central facility in Newhall.

Playing the guitar and singing, 12-year-old Juan Covarrubias took first place in the show that featured 18 different acts, most singing or dancing.

Garnering second place for her voice was Juan's 10-year-old sister, Adrionna.

Although both had participated in other contests, it was their first time in the show at the local Boys & Girls Club.

Juan's family influenced his musical talents. Singing credits go to his grandfather and guitar to his uncle. His mom was almost apologetic, yet very proud, about her children earning the top two prizes - explaining that there were many deserving candidates.

The panel of seven judges included vlub board members and two parents of alumni. As the judges announced the winners, from fifth to first places, they acknowledged that they saw a lot of talent, commitment and teamwork and it was a challenging task to select the top performers.

Dancing abilities were demonstrated by the remaining winners: third place - Megan Cooper, 13; Mary Ray, 13; and Mariah Romero, 11; fourth place - sisters Marissa Scott, 10, and Heather, 9; and fifth place - 9-year-old Lorenzo Aguinaldo.

The show also featured a comedy routine and poetry reading.

The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley hosts two talent shows annually as part of its Arts component. Programs in this area enable youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness - and explore possible careers - through knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts, crafts, performing arts and creative writing.

In the computer lab at the central facility, club members also receive training in digital arts, including photography, photo illustration, movie and music making, stop motion animation and Web design.

The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley is a member of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, an organization with more than 3,000 clubs nationwide.

The local club was formed in 1968 by a group of community leaders who recognized the need for high-quality programs and facilities at affordable costs for area young people.

The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley now serves more than 3,500 youth, ages 7-17, at facilities in Newhall, Canyon Country and Val Verde.

Programs engage members in education and career exploration, the arts, sports, recreation and fitness, character and leadership development and healthy life choices.
