During their Sunday church services on Sept. 28, the Unitarian Universalist Worship Team had arranged for
Kathy Carbone, performing arts librarian at Cal Arts, to speak about the university's sister library in Kigali, Rwanda.
When the collection plate was passed around, all proceeds - several hundred dollars - were donated to that charitable effort.
The Interdisciplinary Genocide Studies Center (IGSC) has launched an ambitious book donation drive to have 1,000 books on the shelves in time for the library's grand opening in April 2009.
The mission of the IGSC is to testify to and study genocide, to understand mechanisms and structures of violence, with the goal of preventing mass violence through education.
The collection is focused on the Tutsi genocide.
