Runners raise $60K for Henry Mayo
Contributed by: Michelle Sathe on 10/6/2008

Whether they ran, walked, or strolled across the finish line, approximately 500 participants, as well as event sponsors, raised $60,000 for Henry Mayo during the hospital's 24 th Annual "Run for the Health of It" 5K event on Saturday, Sept. 27 in Valencia.

Registrants paid $30 to run the course, which started at Henry Mayo and ended at the United Methodist Church.

Hart High senior and cross country runner Angel "War Machine" Provincia, 17, was the overall winner, with a time of 16:40. Provincia, cheered on by his coach and cross country teammates, came to the race to work on his 5K proficiency.

"When I saw the entry price, at first I was like whoa, but when I realized it went to help the hospital, I said OK," he said.

"Run for the Health of It" kicked off with the Kiddie K in the hospital parking lot. The 10-year-old-and-under race was led by Robert Horth, M.D. and staff cardiologist at Henry Mayo, who was decked out in a "Healthcare Hero" costume, complete with cape and bulging biceps.

Two of the Hall family's three children competed in the Kiddie K: Allison, 9, and Ryan, 3, while the entire Hall family entered the 5K event. "Our Dad made us do this," said Rachel Hall, 12.

"To be healthy," said their mom, Tina Hall, with a smile. "Ryan was born at Henry Mayo, so we're supporters of the hospital, but we also thought this was a fun family and community event for us to participate in."

California State Assemblyman Cameron Smyth of Valencia watched from the sidelines with his sons, awaiting his wife, Lena, to finish.

"She's been doing this race for a couple of years now. Both of our sons were born at Henry Mayo and we support the hospital 100 percent. Today is a great way to have fun, be healthy, and show that support," Smyth said.

Raffle prizes and results were the focus immediately following the race, as the large audience eagerly awaited to hear the winners. The first award given was the perpetual trophy to the Henry Mayo team with the most registrants.

This year, "Section Zero" took the title with 100 registrants. Team leader Roscoe Marter, M.D. and two nurses from Henry Mayo's Women's Services Unit accepted the prize.

For the "Run," Provincia took home the overall title, as well as the 15-18 category, while Samantha Asenaid, also in the 15-18 category, took home the top female overall title with a time of 21:28.

Terry Bucknall, director of the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center at Henry Mayo, didn't take home a category prize, but still felt like a winner. "I take advantage of every chance I get to exercise and support the hospital," she said.
