More than 90 female golfers teed up for a good time and a good cause on Sept. 16, with a "Rally for the Cure" tournament at Valencia Country Club, which raised $5,100 for the breast cancer awareness campaign.
It was the second year the Valencia Country Club Ladies Golf Association participated in "Rally for the Cure."
"It is important to all women that a cure for breast cancer be found. We can have fun with golf and still raise funds fight this disease," said
Anna Ott, president of Valencia's Bellasport women's golf apparel and organizer of the event. "It was a perfect day on the course."
Ott organized the "Rally" event with assistance from
Karen Campbell.
Lauren Becker, Virginia Cina and
Denise Swart were "closest to the pin" winners during the tournament and were rewarded with Titleist Breast Cancer Awareness golf balls, along with other prizes from title sponsors.
Twin entertainers
Annie and
Amy Smith, who recorded the breast cancer awareness-themed "Do It For Your Mama," also participated at the event.
"Rally for the Cure" is nation's largest grass-roots women's golf program and has had more than 1.4 million people participate in "Rally for the Cure" events since its inception in 1996.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women ages 35 - 54 and accounts for more than 75 percent of all cancer deaths in women ages 55 and older.
Rally for the Cure's mission has been to emphasize the importance of early detection in the successful treatment of breast cancer and to support the promise of
Susan G. Komen for a cure to eliminate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.
Ott, along with the Valencia Country Club Ladies Golf Association members and tournament players, voiced a similar mission with their support of the organization. "We're hoping to find a cure," she said.
Bellasport is located 24305 Town Center Drive, Valencia.
