The community is invited to join family, friends, and clients of LETMESAIL, Inc., a non-profit organization providing social, recreational and educational activities for individuals with disabilities, to a special HOLIDAY MAGIC SHOW on Saturday, December 9 at 7pm.
The professional hour-long magic show will be held at the Valencia High School Theater, located at 27801 N. Dickason Drive in Valencia. This special family event will feature the magic of
Dan Jordan, founder of 3 Ring Entertainment, who is a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and also a member and performer at the world Famous Magic Castle in Hollywood.
Dan has developed many different acts, which include illusion shows, a mind-reading act, and close-up magic. In addition, Dan has many years of experience teaching magic one-on-one and in groups, has authored a book titled "All About Magic Shows For Kids", and has spent the last few years lecturing to other magic clubs on the subject.
LETMESAIL has experienced phenomenal growth and success in its inaugural year. This grassroots organization has grown from a handful of clients to almost 100 participants, aged 16 years old and above, and includes individuals with Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, hearing and vision impairments, physical disabilities and a wide range of intellectual disabilities.
Programs include regularly scheduled social, recreational and educational activities for clients, parents, and caregivers in a new "Lifestyle Enrichment Center" in Valencia. This facility is equipped with tables, chairs, couches, a TV/DVD player, ping pong and foosball tables, a karaoke machine, music CD's and videos, kitchen appliances and food service supplies, and storage cabinets well-stocked with puzzles, arts and craft supplies and a wide selection of board games.
In addition, the organization sponsors adult supervised trips to sporting events and theatrical and cultural activities. Although the organization is currently entirely run by volunteers, LETMESAIL is currently accepting job applications to hire a part-time Program Director.
According to the 2000 U.S. Census, almost one in five people in this country has one or more disability. However, LETMESAIL President Gary Spindt says "services necessary for people with disabilities to live to their full potential are not keeping up." He sites a 2004 report titled the Harris Survey of Americans with Disabilities, produced by the National Organization on Disability, which stated that only 35% of people with disabilities reported being employed full or part time; three times as many people with disabilities live in poverty; people with disabilities are less likely to socialize compared to their non-disabled counterparts; and life satisfaction for people with disabilities lags with only 34% saying they are very satisfied.
According to Board Member
Suzanne Vanvakaris, "The mission of LETMESAIL is to provide individuals who are differently-abled with much needed social, recreational, educational, health, job and independent living skills training, enabling them to experience with confidence an improved quality of life and empowering them to live a more independent and healthy lifestyle."
According to LETMESAIL Board Member
Maureen Spindt, Dan Jordan, who also has a career in law enforcement, is a talented and enthusiastic performer who loves being an entertainer.
Ms. Spindt reminisced "I used to hire Dan the Magic Man for my Mother's Day Parties when I owned Family Affair Co-op Preschool. He also performed at the Cops and Lobsters Tip-A-Cop Fund Raisers when I was Area Director of Santa Clarita Valley Special Olympics. Parents and children of all ages have fond memories of his performances, which always include audience participation."
Guests are invited to attend LETMESAIL'S HOLIDAY MAGIC SHOW for a $10 donation per ticket. All proceeds will be used to support LETMESAIL. In addition to enjoying a wonderful professional magic show, each person who purchases a ticket will receive a "guest card" to The World Famous Magic Castle in Hollywood.
The Magic Castle is an exclusive private club with an elegant restaurant. Guests must be at least 21 years old to attend and need to either be a Magic Castle member, or have a guest card from a member in order to enter.
