Medical executive staff awards scholarships
Contributed by: Laura Young on 6/17/2008

Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital's Medical Executive Committee once again awarded $1,000 scholarships to four 2008 graduating high school students.

The scholarships were presented to the recipients during the June 10 quarterly medical staff meeting.

"The Medical Staff of Henry Mayo hospital is very proud to award the scholarships to these young people who have demonstrated a commitment to learning," said Mark Sender, M.D., Henry Mayo's Medical Chief of Staff. "Our hope is that when they have completed their education, the new skills and knowledge they have developed will one day be of benefit to us all."

The four students were chosen from nine applicants, and were awarded the scholarships based on scholastic achievement.

Scholarship criteria included high school graduation in 2008, SAT scores and acceptance to a four-year university or college. The applicants must also be a child or step-child of an employee of Henry Mayo hospital or related entity.

The medical staff have awarded scholarships to children of hospital employees during the last 20 years for a total of $48,000 in scholarships.

Initially, four students received $500 each; the scholarship benefit was increased to $1,000 in 2005.
