The Samuel Dixon Family Health Centers operate three clinics located in Val Verde, Canyon Country and interestingly, at the Newhall Elementary School, where UU's once rented space for their services. They serve the very neediest of our SCV population, the under insured and the uninsured, and the homeless. Governmental funding has been cut back drastically for this organization. Their website states that "no contribution is too small". Therefore Unitarian Universalist's have made them the loose plate charity for June.
The Samuel Dixon Family Health Centers came about due to the cooperative efforts of the office of LA County Supervisor
Baxter Ward
and the Val Verde Advisory Council, in 1978. Funding was acquired from the Henry Mayo Newhall Health Foundation to convert an annex under construction for the Rev.
Samuel Dixon
's church for the Val Verde Site of the first clinic. Federal grants were secured as well. Kiwanis and Rotary members led a drive for labor and materials to finish the annex. People came from all over the Santa Clarita Valley and donated time and materials, spending weekends with hammers and saws to complete the project. Sadly The Rev. Samuel Dixon passed away just before the building was complete.
Unitarian Universalists (UU's) draw upon the teachings of many of the world's faiths to help individuals build their own theology. The church is built around a set of values rather than a fixed belief system. Services are held at 10:30 a.m. Sundays at the SCV Senior Center, 22900 Market St., Newhall. For directions and further information, visit www.UUofSCV.org or call (661) 254-7866.
