Award-winning artist, designer and crafting personality Alexa Joy is debuting a new collection titled 'Abstractions' featuring over 20 original abstract paintings in a solo art exhibit at the Canyon Theatre Guild Gallery, 24242 San Fernando Road, Old Town Newhall 91321.
The show premieres Friday, June 1 and has been extended through Saturday, June 30. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, noon-7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and Sunday.
Admission to the exhibit is free. The artwork ranges from $45 to $950; a portion of the proceeds will go to benefit the Santa Clarita Artist Association.
"Abstraction is defined as a state in which somebody is deep in thought and not concentrating on his or her surroundings," said Joy, who delves into her imagination to create this body of thought-provoking work. "It's like adding new questions to the world through art."
The Santa Clarita resident names her original paintings by the collection and numbers so she doesn't influence the viewers with titles. All the pieces are acrylic and mixed media on canvas. They range in size from 4" x 4" to 24" x 36".
"Abstractions" will run in conjunction with the CTG's productions of "You Can't Take it With You" and "Robin Hood," the final shows of the theatre's 2006-2007 season.
Alexa Joy has been developing her singular style of abstract art since childhood. The Los Angeles City Hall Bridge Gallery displayed her works when she was only 12.
Since then, her paintings, sculptures and paper craft creations have won more than 50 awards. Among them: 1 st Place at the AFL-CIO Union Artist Exhibit, 2 nd Best Professional Hand Crafter 2005 and 2006, and an SCAA Art Classic silver medal.
In 2006, the City of Santa Clarita commissioned Joy to create an original piece for the city's "Art in Public Places" program. Later that year, her piece 'Here's Looking at You' was installed across from the Canyon Theatre. Locally, she has won the Humanitarian Character Counts Award and has co-coordinated benefit art events.
She also hosts and designs all the projects for her DVD series "Quick & Easy Crafting with Alexa Joy," based on the popular classes she has taught in Santa Clarita for more than 10 years. Her "Mini-Books" DVD has received international acclaim. She is currently filming a second DVD series for T2G Productions.
Alexa Joy is a member of the Santa Clarita Artist Association and the Hollywood Arts Council. This year she has been included in Who's Who in America. For more information, visit
