The world's first martial arts history museum will be hosting a special exhibit on Saturday, January 13 at the Valencia Library. The museum, which is spearheaded by museum founder
Michael Matsuda and state Assemblyman
Richard Alarcon, plan to exhibit a variety of artifacts, photographs, movie costumes and even a Samurai outfit for all to enjoy and learn about the rich history of Asian arts.
From 2 to 4 p.m., the museum will be presenting a video historical look at Asian martial arts in American media featuring "martial arts in film," "martial arts in television," and"martial arts in print."
In addition, the museum presentation is proud to feature film star and action stuntman
James Lew as its guest of honor. Lew was the star of the 2006 film "18 Fingers of Death," stuntman for the upcoming "Pirates 3" film and can be seen in a variety of commercials and action films. Lew will be providing a look at martial arts stunts in film and giving a simple demonstration of stuntwork.
Sword historian
Rafael Kosche and museum board member will also conduct a short seminar that day on the history of the Samurai sword bringing with him a variety of actual swords.
Museum president Michael Matsuda will also be making a short presentation of the status of the museum and its plan to open in the city of Santa Clarita. "This is a wonderful opportunity to open the doors to this exhibit in Santa Clarita," notes museum president Matsuda. "There is so much rich history of the arts and the kids will really enjoy the exhibit."
The display walls will include a variety of photographs of films and TV shows that have been influenced by Asian martial arts. "The captions will provide a brief history of each type of media that many people were not even aware of," adds Matsuda.
Costume displays will include the Monkey King from the Chinese opera, the Dragon Lady from "X-Treme Fighter," the Monkey Man from "X-Treme Fighter," the armor of the Samurai, ancient kendo outfit, a tai chi uniform worn by Hall of Famer Wen Mei Yu and many more.
