Ya Gotta Have Locks of Love!
Contributed by: Steven Page on 6/26/2007

Three brave Serrania Elementary third grade girls and two of their teachers stood in front of the entire student body last week and had their hair chopped off. Or more specifically, had their locks cut for Locks of Love. Serrania students Madelyn Bourgoujian, Madeleine Page and Katelyn Wilson as well as teachers Debbie Dexter and Miko Riley all volunteered to have at least 10 inches of hair cut off. As the student body counted down from 5 to 1, volunteers fromBigoudi International Salon, stood with scissors ready. As the students screamed "CUT", the scissors sliced through the girls and women's hair leaving them each with a new look.

The idea to cut their hair for Locks of Love originated with Madeleine Page and Katelyn Wilson last year. They both read about this wonderful organization and thought it would be a very generous act to contribute to their cause. They hoped that by having their hair cut in front of the entire school that theywould motivate some other girls to think about giving up their hair in the future. Both girls grew their hair all summer and school year with this goal in mind, and pestered their teacher Debbie Dexter until she finally agreed to join them. As the date approached they were joined Madelyn Bourgoujian and Miko Riley as well.

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. They meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prosthesesthey provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.

All five of these generous ladies are proud of what they gave and are now enjoying the added bonus of cool new summer haircuts.
