Shirts, food prepare students for AP calculus test
Contributed by: Pat Willett on 5/10/2007

Sitting at lunch with his wife and son, Damon Goar looked at the soda machine and saw the advertisement - Enjoy Coca-Cola Classic. He is teaching AP Calculus at Golden Valley High School and inspiration hit. How about a shirt for each of his students taking the AP exam that said:

Enjoy

Cal-Culus

Class

He and his wife thought it might be great and the kids loved the idea. They sported their new red and black shirts May 10, the day of the exam. The shirt back includes ingredients, calories, calculus terms and nicknames for each student, attempting to meet the food and beverage requirements.

They arrived at school at 7 a.m. to take part in a breakfast that included cereal and milk, fruit, bagels (toaster) and cream cheese or butter, granola bars and juice. The group ate, enjoyed one another's company and tried not to stress about the four hour test they were soon to experience.

Administrators were invited to wish them well and other math teachers stopped by to cheer them on. Goar provided the final pep talk and they were off to another room to put their knowledge to the test.
