Come Sunday, June 1, the Santa Clarita Master Chorale will be treating you to a program of blockbusters, opening with a classic that'll take you from zero to 70 mph in four beats of a timpani,
Carl Orff
's "O Fortuna" from "Carmina Burana."
We promise you goose bumps and butterflies right on through the London songs of Sweeney Todd and a finale that will take you "Over the Rainbow."
Two gentlemen who knew exactly how to "wow" a crowd are on the bill. The chorale will offer up
Handel
's "Sing Unto God" and "Hallelujah, Amen," and still another "Hallelujah" from
Beethoven
's Mount of Olives.
There will be plenty of thrills from the 20th and 21st centuries, too. A "Gloria" from Los Angeles composer
Ariel Quintana
is full of rhythms from his native Argentina, and the soul-filled "Totus Tuus" is on the program from the dramatic Polish composer
Henryk Gorecki
.
The "Broadway Belles" of the chorale will be front and center, presenting "Leading Ladies: Songs that Stopped the Show." Just in time for the beach, Angeleno arranger
Ed Lojeski
is on the program with "I Get Around" and "Good Vibrations."
A small ensemble from the chorale will present two exquisite gems -the achingly beautiful "Crucifixus" and the exuberant "Ex Resurrexit" from
Bach
's beloved "Mass in B Minor."
The "Sanctus" from
Maurice Durufle
's "Requiem" is an enchanting midsummer dream, and accompanist
Jan Sanborn
will be offering a piano solo - surely as delightful as icy sherbet on a hot afternoon. Plus, the chorale will travel down home with "Nelly Bly," a
Stephen Foster
tune.
The drama continues with American composer
Z. Randall Stroope
, with his soaring "Lamentations of Jeremiah," and the tenderest of love songs, "Amor di Mi Alma."
The chorale will also reprise a selection from its "Armed Man" performance in March.
This concert comes just in time for your family's first summer celebrations, a perfect musical treat for a June evening.
