Blog Entry 12 of 21 Adventures in Parenting

I am a valleynews.com staffer, wife, and mom. My husband of two years and I had our first child in February. I will write here occassionally about my adventures with baby Frank plus all the wonderful things going on in Burbank and Glendale (as well as the surrounding communities)dealing with children.

Places to go and people to see

Last Sunday, my husband Fernando and I decided to spend some quality time with baby Frank during a family outing.

Usually, weekends were spent at home ordering take out and watching television, but that was before Frank's arrival into this world.

Now that he's five months old and is well behaved for an infant, we want to take him everywhere. We want to show him the world. The problem is we're two former couch potatoes that really don't know where to go.

I'm sure there's some wonderful places out there ... right in our own backyard. For example, it's been years since we visited Griffith Park. And that's exactly where we went on Sunday.

We packed up Frank's diaper bag, grabbed some Subway, and were on our way. We didn't know what to expect. We just knew we had to get out of the house.

When we got there, we saw pony rides. We were enthused - a definite photo opportunity. Turns out, however, Frank is too young to get on the pony and will have to wait until he's a year old.

Although we were disappointed, this was great. We were exploring our surroundings.

Next, we saw the famous merry-go-round. However, at this point, Frank was beat and decided that he needed to nap. The two of us stared at our baby for what seemed an eternity hoping to see him open his eyes. Nothing. He was knocked out.

So we kept trekking along, discovering Griffith Park's attractions: Travel Town Museum, a train ride, the Autry National Center. And of course, you can't talk about Griffith Park without mentioning the Griffith Observatory, which has undergone major changes.

Our Sunday outing inspired us to get off the couch. To see what's out there. Sure, Frank is still awfully small but three's company and it's just so much more fun to do things with him.

On Monday, I asked one of my co-workers who lives in Santa Clarita if she knew of any fun, family friendly places we could take Frank to. She mentioned the William S. Hart Regional Park with its barnyard animals, and the Placerita Canyon Nature Center featuring an animal presentation, among other places.

So our mission is to visit new places. I want to hear from
valleynews.com registered users. Tell us what's out there, please.
What are some of your favorites places in L.A.? Email me at

Frank will thank you!
