It's a funny thing about old friends. You can go for days or months or ??? without seeing them, but the bonds remain in place through time. Such is the case of the OLD FRIENDS gathering yesterday. There were only four of them this time (two couldn't make it), but they have been friends for 70 years now and it's a beautiful sight to see. I'm talking about my own mother (pictured here with my sister and myself) (I'm on the left) and her high school friends. They have been saying they would get together here or there, but nobody ever made concrete plans to meet. Most of the husbands are now gone, and the gals are getting up there in years. It's a little more difficult these days for some to get around. Others have health issues they are dealing with, which only adds to the distance between them. All this being said, my own mother decided enough was enough. The 'gals' needed to get together. So she decided to invite them over for an afternoon of desserts, coffee, tea, and just good conversation. To sweeten the deal, she invited the daughters of her friends. The primary reason was so the old friends had proper transportation to and from the Glendale abode. The threat of rain loomed, but it didn't matter. The plan was set, the invites were sent and that was that!
The afternoon began around 2 p.m. with the first ones to arrive from Monterey Park or some such place. All this amid phone calls from some stuck in traffic. Pretty soon the others arrived and the gab session commenced. And what a session it was. It didn't matter that these ladies hadn't seen each other in a LONG while, the bond was very strong and it was as if they simply took up where they had left off the last time they were together.
All were told NOT to bring anything, but that didn't matter. These ladies were all raised in an era of knowing that you don't go to somebody's home empty handed. So there were more goodies than one could or should imagine to be consumed! There was fruit, candy, nuts, cake, cookies, coffee, tea....and on and on! There were new pictures being taken, old pictures being shared and laughter that filled the house the entire time. Talk of children, grand-children, births and deaths were all covered during the course of the visit. These are women who have lived throuh and survived the Great Depression, WWII, marriages, and so on. They have lost husbands, children, and even grandchildren, but they were very much alive and alert on this particular Saturday in March.
Afternoon soon faded and became early evening and they continued chatting and laughing. Even the daughters and grand daughter had a wonderful time--getting to know each other and simply enjoying what the older generation was talking about. The gathering finally broke around 7 p.m. with hugs and kisses shared by all, vowing not to wait so long until the next gathering.
Yes....there's something about old friends....
