Blog Entry 2 of 6 Mother of the Blog
My baby girl is getting married in June 2008. My good intentions were to start this exactly a year before the Big Day, but that road to hell is not only paved with good intentions, but strewn with the detrius of being overbooked, overstressed, over budget and overwrought. I am not the mother of Bridezilla but she is one of my princesses and I want her to have a perfect day. Have I mentioned that I'm a journalist and her father is an artist? We're doing this a little under the national average financially, but hope for a party to remember. I'll be sharing special moments, such as rounding up centerpieces from every Target store in the Valley and the first time I saw her in The Dress. Feel free to share your wedding memories and advice; there will be contributions from other family members - from both sides - throughout the next year.

349 days and the deejays are duking it out

After a successful trip to two Northridge Target Stores, this BrideMama is pleased to report that all the centerpieces have been obtained and the line "remember clickers" (long-stemmed butane lighters to the rest of the world) has been added to the Marilyn book. Of course, we still have to get candles, but that's what IKEA is for, right?

BrideGirl has been doing her part, surfing the net for deejays and musicians. She interviewed a local company that's done some premiere events, but they were a bit out of our price range, then she found a company online and talked with their representative, who provided dozens of references that are swaying us in their direction.

Of course, the competition is fierce, but sometimes it's friendly. At the Goldie Awards Saturday night, BrideGirl was sitting with a friend who knows several people in the music business and was making some recommendations. Listening in politely was a young actress who stole the show in "Snow White" as the black cat. When there was a lull in the conversation, she offered "Well, if you like Hannah Montana, I'm only a dollar."

I better tell her to save the date.

The dress is still at the bridal shop, awaiting final payment. I've been stalling because of the hair that's always in the air at our house where wolfdog Dusty and husky/collie Dharma live. I figure if I haven't paid it off, I can't really bring it home, can I? I'm actually anxious to see BrideGirl in the dress again. I'm sure, like the first time, it will take my breath away seeing her in the ivory creation with cathedral length veil (the only person more excited about her veil than BrideGirl is Yoti, the photographer. He's very creative). What I can't wait to see is BridePapa's reaction.

In what seems like a dress rehearsal for the finality of the wedding, BrideGirl and AlmostASonInLaw are soon moving out of our house and into an apartment of their own with her SlaveofHonor sister. It will be the first time in 25 years that my husband and I have had the house to ourselves and I have to say that I have mixed feelings.

I'm glad because it's an independence step that they all need to take and because BridePapa has waited patiently for his own art studio (the minute my son joined the Army, I claimed his room for an office); but I like a noisy house, full of people. They have promised to be home every Sunday for dinner. All three of them.

Hallelujah!
