Blog Entry 1 of 6 Mother of the Blog
My baby girl is getting married in June 2008. My good intentions were to start this exactly a year before the Big Day, but that road to hell is not only paved with good intentions, but strewn with the detrius of being overbooked, overstressed, over budget and overwrought. I am not the mother of Bridezilla but she is one of my princesses and I want her to have a perfect day. Have I mentioned that I'm a journalist and her father is an artist? We're doing this a little under the national average financially, but hope for a party to remember. I'll be sharing special moments, such as rounding up centerpieces from every Target store in the Valley and the first time I saw her in The Dress. Feel free to share your wedding memories and advice; there will be contributions from other family members - from both sides - throughout the next year.

Only 352 days, but who's counting?

I need a pencil sharpener.

And probably a highlighter.

The sharpener is because everything changes; the highlighter is so that I don't forget the changes.

God knows I have the books, including a spiral Marilyn Monroe notebook gifted to me by the source of my joy and frustration, daughter Casey who is getting married next June. That's so I remember who I talked with, what I spent and what details are perched precariously on the cracks.

As a reporter, I believe in research. As a writer, I also believe in financially supporting other writers. My family prefers to call it overkill.

Here's what's on my nightstand:
* The Complete Idiot's Guide to being the Mother of the Bride by Amy Zavatto (already dog-eared, as I've had it the longest, a gift from my other not-getting-married daughter who has begun to call herself the Slave of Honor)
* The Everything Mother of the Bride Book, a survival guide for Mom, by Shelley Hagen
* the knot Guide for the Mother of the Bride by Carley Roney
* The Bride's Book of Lists: Things to Do, Questions to Ask by Amy Nebens ( I figured even if I wasn't in the show itself, it might be good to read the script)
* Emily Post's The Wedding Planner for Moms by Peggy Post
* It's Her Wedding, but I'll Cry If I Want To by Leslie Milk (how could I possibly leave this book on the shelf with a title like that? Full of good advice and sprinkled with laughs)
* Notes from the Mother of the Bride by Sherri Goodall (a good pocket-sized hardback book with some extremely important information)

I've been informed I'm not allowed to buy any more books, therefore leaving a cushion should we need an additional dove or party favor.

We are pretty well-prepared, as weddings go. We have booked the location and all its accoutrements (food, chairs, linens, toilet paper); hired a photographer; talked to our friend the baker who will make the cake; bought the dress and reserved the DJ.

We are looking at invitations, pondering whether they can be handmade or if we should support international trading and save money. After all, nobody keeps invitations.

Having gone to a wedding last Saturday, my daughter and almostasoninlaw came home with two miniature books. She immediately declared that there will be no favors that someone has to find a place for.

Those specially colored M&Ms are looking better and better. But since the wedding is in June, mesh bags would just get icky. We're looking at miniature cannisters.

A trip to Target last night for Sweet & Low and a garden lantern turned into a major shopping extravaganza. How was I to know that the PERFECT capiz candleholders would be on an end cap that we had to pass on the way to the checkstands? We bought everything the store had in stock and I'm picking up six more on the way home.

From two different Target stores in the Valley.

I'm blogging about this because I can't afford a therapist. Feel free to add your comments and/or sympathy. Or advice.

Gotta go. Target closes in a couple of hours......
