This is my perspective on the people, places and events that make up my little neighborhood in Saugus.

Baby girls
Contributed by: Tim Haddock   on 1/24/2007

My wife and my friend " Lisa" had this great idea. We all have babies. My wife and I have an 18-month-old boy named Eric. Lisa and her husband have an 11-month-old named Alexis.

Both moms have not been working to stay home with their babies for as long as possible. For Lisa, that ended at 11 months, after a vacation to Hawaii.

For my wife, it ended after 18 months, after the holidays.

Both wanted to go back to work, but neither wanted to put their kids in day care.
Lisa couldn't find anything that suited her high standards. My wife decided she did not want her baby boy in day care until he was 2.

That leaves a little gap. And that's where I come in.

Lisa and I really, but since I wasn't part of the conversation until last Thursday, my addition to the equation became crucial.

We, by we I mean Lisa and my wife, decided that sharing baby-sitting duties would suit our needs just fine.

Now, we have a schedule that would rival the Farmer's Almanac harvest times, but it looks like it might work.

The only hitch I foresee is that Alexis is a girl. I don't do girls. We have two boys. The dog is a boy. My wife, who would love to have a little girl to raise, refuses to have another child for fear of having another boy. She's outnumbered. Even with the dog. Toilet seats are always up. Bathroom towels are always left on the floor. Milk is drunk out of the carton. And ESPN is always on.

This is a man house, complete with surround sound and golf clubs in the living room.

Lisa is perfectly comfortable with my watching Alexis. We have been friends for a long time and she knows what to expect. I will keep her clean and fed and read her the sports section of the newspaper every morning.

This morning, for example, we read T.J. Simers in the L.A. Times. Now, I realize that I should be reading Kevin Modesti to her, but I have a little edge on people who subscribe to the paper. I can read Modesti the night before it comes out. Leaves little surprises when my Daily News is delivered the next morning.

Besides, I think it is necessary to read what the compeitition is writing about.
In this instance, the competition was writing about USC basketball.
I got a couple paragraphs in and Alexis started to crawl out of the room.
Not interested.

At all.

She sat through Morning Briefing. There is a daily David Beckham item in there these days, and she appears to have a crush on Becks, even at 11 months. Join the rest of the women in the world.

But she couldn't get past Tim Floyd and the Galen Center. And I can't really blame her. I was a little disappointed to see Simers writing about USC basketball. He usually has more interesting topics to write about.

Alexis expected better and she made it through the family room and out of the kitchen before I finished the column.

Hopefully, something more interesting will be in tomorrow's paper.
