Invasion of Paradise/Day of the Locusts
Contributed by: Dora Herrera on 1/16/2007

Telchac Yucatán, a beautiful way to end the year: warm weather, beautiful beaches and family (no need to mention the terrific food for which the Yucatán is famous). Then, a dark cloud far in the horizon. The dreaded "Norte" (cold weather & rain from the north) was here to spoil our day in Paradise!

But wait...what is that sound? Ohhhh! What IS that?!!! LOCUSTS!

The swarm arrives sounding like the tinkling of a light rain shower or a strong ocean breeze. We stand on the balcony and just stare at Nature's show. Our neighbors come outside and begin to bang pots and empty water bottles in a futile effort to keep the pests flying past. It works, but there is no possible way to keep them all moving - especially since the swarm continues to pass through our home for over five hours. The passing is impressive, awesome and depressing.

The road, the dividing line separating the coast from the inland, was the delineating line for the swarm. On the one side, bright & clear skies as far as the eye can see. On the coast side, the hot sun and pretty white clouds obliterated by millions of hungry pests, the coconut leaves no longer green but a bowed mass of dark brown. The next day, the denuded trees and locust droppings are mute witnesses to the onslaught of December 31, 2006. What a way to end the year!
