The road west
Contributed by: Jason Kandel on 12/28/2006

On a trip to Ireland, after hearing that I walk in Glendale, one of our Irish hosts inquired if I would like to take a walk.

The plan was, as a rain shower was ending, to drive to the edge of town near a sports field which allowed access from the main road to the river walk and walk west.

As he parked the car, and we started off, I spotted the signs in the upper photo.

My companion asked me if I knew what they meant. Not speaking "Irish or Gaelic" I said "no." He explained that the town fathers wanted to do more than simply designate the town limit, so in addition to the required signs, they added the words "Slán Abhaile."

Literally translated they mean "Safe Home."

With the rise in speed of travel, it's this town's wish, along with many others,
to all that pass to "have a safe journey home."
