Guest lecturer and Glendale resident
Judy Springborn and "
Freedom," her guide dog for the deaf, will visit the Glendale Community College lip reading class on Mon., Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. at the Adult Recreation Center, 201 E. Colorado Blvd.
The lip reading course is one of the Lifelong Learning Seminars offered through the college's Continuing Education program.
Springborn will discuss her experiences as a profoundly deaf adult and how she coped with her hearing loss. In order to be able to communicate, she taught herself how to lip read and in 2003, she received a cochlear implant.
Today, with the aid of her dog, Freedom, from Dogs for the Deaf in Oregon, Judy is leading a full life. She is a talented ceramicist and has been teaching at the Burbank Creative Arts Center for the past 18 years.
She will introduce Freedom and demonstrate the type of assistance a Hearing Dog can provide. Dogs for the Deaf has rescued and placed over 3,000 dogs in homes as hearing dogs, special needs dogs, dogs for deniors or career change dogs.
Speech therapist
Stela Fejtek teaches the GCC lip reading course. Classes meet on Mon. and Thurs. from 9:30-11 a.m. The lecture is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
