Jay Parker's extremely "cool" comedy, "Iceberg Ahead!" has arrived at the Lizard Theater, towing a boatload of giggles, guffaws and hoots of laughter in its wake.
Set in 1912, just after the sinking of the Titanic, the play tells the story of a terrible tragedy. No, it's not about those who were lost at sea, but about a theater production company that is fast sinking without its chief benefactors... who
did go down with the famous ship.
Rubin Aguilar plays the theater producer, Mr. David Rickman, whom we see in the opening scene trying to woo the heart...er, I mean the pocket book of the young, rich and very naïve Miss Emily Montrose, deftly played by
Esther Mulvihill. She is the daughter and sole heir to the just-drowned benefactors' fortune.
Quite against the wishes of the company's world-renowned actress (and diva), Miss Lydia Felby, played by the remarkably talented
Sandy Sanchez, Rickman agrees to let the girl "star" in their new production. The sips of congratulatory champagne enjoyed by all kick off a spiraling whirlpool of mayhem, misunderstanding and mistaken identity that are guaranteed to leave the audience "in stitches."
A penniless actor looking for work and his newsboy son (
Jay Parker and real-life son,
Cameron Parker) join the mêlée, along with a "pretend" father and son, who are really Miss Montrose and her foreign maid, (
Tatiane Amnuar) in disguise.
Add to that, an insane stage manager/costumer (the wonderfully zany
Kimberly Aguilar) and a sadistic doctor (
Matthew Dorio) who is trying to "take her away, ha-ha" and you have a full cast of irrepressible actors out to tickle your funny bone, your ribs and every other bone in your body.
"Iceberg Ahead! is a bawdy, slapstick, hysterical farce of "epic proportions." A real hoot and a half!
It plays Fridays at 8:00 pm and Saturdays at 7:00pm, indefinitely.
Admission is "pay what you can" with a suggested $10 donation.
Be sure to call for reservations, because the theater is small... no tiny... no miniscule. (Indeed, the actors must take care not to fall into your lap or spill champagne on your shoes!)
