Burbank Animal Shelter sets kitten adoption fair
Contributed by: Anne Macleod on 7/22/2007

Someone's unaltered cat has a litter of kittens. The family soon tires of the extra responsibility and discards them at the animal shelter.

A feral cat has the audacity to give birth in someone's yard and the newborn kittens are immediately taken away from her and brought to the animal shelter with no thought as to their survival or the mother's distress.

Yes, kitten season is in full swing once again and caring volunteers throughout the city are working tirelessly to save as many little lives as they can.

The Volunteers of the Burbank Animal Shelter's (VBAS) kitten foster program cares for up to 300 homeless kittens every year. Without our volunteers many of these animals would die.

It's very sad when motherless newborn kittens are turned in, as the younger they are, the more they must fight to survive. No kitten should be taken away from its mother in the first couple of weeks, regardless of the situation.

In an ideal world when a domestic cat has kittens, the owner would take responsibility for the litter until the kittens are old enough to be adopted. They would then immediately get their cat spayed so they don't have the same problem repeatedly. We don't need a state law to use common sense.

Until people start to recognize the importance of spaying/neutering their pets and until people realize that having feral cats in their neighborhood is not a bad thing, our foster program will continue to exist.

We encourage the public to adopt from our foster program. As all the kittens have been cared for in our volunteers' homes. They are extremely well adjusted and well cared for.

The VBAS holds regular adoption events in addition to showing the kittens from our homes when they become available.

Our next adoption fair will be from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, at the Burbank Animal Shelter.
