[Below is her candidate statement.]

Dear Friends,

I am running for Board of Education in our city. I am running for this seat because I have a fundamental commitment to excellent public education. As an educator myself, I know what it takes to have outstanding public schools. First-rate education is crucial for our children's success, and I have the experience and the ability to fight for excellent public schools.

My professional background and community service have prepared me for the School Board. I teach at Cal State LA's School of Social Work. I have taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Child Welfare Policy, Public Policy and Social Services, and Fieldwork Practicum. I coordinate the Inter-University Consortium program where we train future child protective services social workers. My expertise in the area of children and families and the policies that impact them are critical to the work of the School Board.

In our city, I have a long history of leadership and service. I have successfully worked with our civic and business groups, parents and teachers, and city departments. I know how our city, schools and community fit together.

On the School Board, I want to prepare all kids for success. We must continue to provide college-bound opportunities at our schools. However, we must also provide preparation for those students not attending college.

I will work to have safe and secure schools. I am honored to have the confidence and endorsement of Glendale Police Officers' Association. Also, I will ensure that we engage parents and the community in the education of our children, and give parents a voice in how we set educational policies. I want to set the highest educational standards, and give our teachers the tools they need to allow our children to succeed.

Lastly, as Board Members, we must lead the partnerships between our school communities and state-elected leaders to work toward adequate funding for our district.

I will bring to the School Board my expertise in policy development, my experience in the classroom and my history of civic leadership. Excellent public education is the critical foundation for a bright and successful future -- my commitment to this is constant.

I would be honored to receive your vote on Arpil 3rd.

Sincerely,
Nayiri Nahabedian
