Kids pay tribute to the women they admire most
Contributed by: Kids Letters on 3/10/2008

TODAY'S TOPIC: March is Women's History Month. We asked you to write about a woman of the past or present whom you admire.

The woman that I admire is my mom. I admire her because she is great at taking care of things. She takes care of her spouse, her children, her home and many more things. When I grow up I want to be just like her. Except for the woman part.
John Whitesell, 8
Wilbur Elementary
Tarzana

It's women's history month and I admire my mom because she works a lot to provide for her family. Also, she has a lot of love and whenever she's sick, she still works. I think she's the best mom ever.
Marie Mendez, 10
Lemay Elementary
Van Nuys

The woman that I admire most from the past is Helen Keller. Helen Keller got sick when she was a child and it left her deaf and blind. Helen Keller is an important role model because even though she had disadvantages from other people, she still went to school. She was a person who didn't give up and made a difference in the world.

The woman that I most admire would be my mom. I admire her the most because she takes me to school and takes me to all my baseball games. She is also helping to do the Daily News Kids' Page and turns them in. Right now, she is helping a kid have heart surgery.
Cole Hanson, 8

One of my favorite American heroes is Harriet Tubman. I once read a book called "Young Harriet Tubman." It told a lot about how Harriet Tubman freed over 300 slaves. She freed the slaves by hiding with them to escape. Harriet Tubman was a very, very brave and strong woman who freed herself and others! I enjoyed reading this book about Harriet Tubman over and over.

I admire my mom because she respects others. I really admire her because she does a lot for me like helping me clean my room, making food for me and more. My mom cleans houses, respects other people and respects property. A lot of people that she knows really like her because she does a lot of talented things. My favorite is that she cooks good, draws beautifully and dresses beautifully.
Melissa Alvarado, 9
Fernangeles Elementary
Sun Valley

The woman I admire most would have to be my great aunt. She was a political prisoner for five years. She is one of the most active 81 year olds I have ever met. She survives every single day with me and my friends and knows how to take care of us even when she doesn't speak English. She cooks, cleans and is an amazing person. She was born and raised in Cuba and has so many stories to tell. When I am older, I hope I can be as strong and amazing as she.

I admire a famous girl named Anne Frank. Anne Frank is Jewish. She was born in Frankfurt, Germany. I admire her because she wrote her diary when she was hiding from the Nazis. She hid from the Nazis for two years and then they finally found her and her family and took them to the concentration camp. While she was in the attic, she wrote her diary. But when they took her to the concentration camp, she stopped writing because she left it in the attic. When Anne Frank was in the concentration camp she died and two days later they freed everybody that was in the concentration camp. Then Anne's dad published the diary and it became famous and the book is called "Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl."

I admire Miley Cyrus. I admire her because I love her songs and many people say I look like her. She has her own movie show called "Hannah Montana." I haven't missed one show yet. I love her.
Ophir Sahar, 8

A woman whom I admire is my mom. She taught me how to stay strong and to stand up for myself when someone said something about me. Even when she gets mad at me, I know it's really love. Also, when I need someone to talk like a friend, she's always there. My dad, sister, brother and me know that when she's having a bad day, you just got to leave her alone! My mom does a lot for me and she'll never see or even know how much I appreciate it!
Courtney Goff, 10
Township Elementary
Simi Valley

The person I admire is my teacher, Mrs. Stein, because she teaches me so many things. Also because she's sweet, kind, generous and thoughtful. She is the best teacher I could have.
Daniela Thomas, 8
Wilbur Elementary
Tarzana

The famous woman I admire is Frida Kahlo. She was an important Mexican painter. One of her best portraits was a self-portrait in 1942. At the age of 15, she was severely injured in an accident while riding on a bus in Mexico City. She had about 35 operations, including the amputation of one leg. She married the famous Mexican artist, Diego Rivera. Kahlo was born in Coylacan, southwest Mexico City. Sometimes she painted a portrait of herself with ornaments and Mexican Indian costumes.
Emily Rodriguez, 11
Oxnard Street Elementary

I most admire Oprah Winfrey because she is very creative and kind. She has a big TV show and people write letters and she answers them on her show and she gives away free things on her show. She is very great.
Maddie Fowle, 8

A woman I admire is Mrs. Pullman. Mrs. Pullman is my third grade teacher. She is funny. She makes me laugh. Mrs. Pullman is nice. She is a smart teacher. Mrs. Pullman is beautiful.
Joshua Herrera, 8

I admire my teacher because she teaches me math, reading and a lot more. Her name is Mrs. Stein. She is very fun and does not yell. It's fun having her as my teacher. She is the greatest teacher I've ever had.
Andre Rabizadeh, 9
Wilbur Elementary
Tarzana

The woman I admire most is Wilma Rudolph. She was a very famous runner. She won three gold medals in the 1960 Rome Olympics and in 1956 in Melbourne, she won a bronze medal. But things weren't that great for her. Before that, as a little girl, she had polio, a disease where an arm or a leg is almost completely paralyzed. Wilma had polio and one of her legs was affected and she couldn't do any athletics for a long time. But after a long time of exercise and perseverance, she decided to take off her brace before church on Sunday. When she walked in, everyone was amazed and she had almost no limp. She became one of the best runners in the world! I admire her more than anyone else because she proved that even with polio, you can overcome anything and be great while overcoming it.

I admire Kelly Clarkson. I admire her because she is one of my favorite singers. I also admire her because she has the same name as me. I love her music. She rocks!

You probably never heard of my mom so I'm going to tell you about her for Women's History. My mom does a lot of good things, so here is one: She dances. She is the best dancer ever. She also goes to the store with me. She loves me and takes cares of me, too. I love her.
Brianna Murillo, 8
Fernangeles Elementary
Sun Valley

Of all the great women in the past, I most admire Amelia Earhart. I admire her for many reasons. First, I admire her because she was such a great pilot. Second, because she almost flew around the world. When I grow up, I also want to be a great pilot like her. She was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean nonstop. It does not discourage me that she disappeared.
Benjamin Griswold, 12
Oakwood School

Clara Barton was one of our greatest American heroes. Clara started the Red Cross. She also saved many lives, like her brother's. Without her during the Civil War saving soldiers, we probably would have lost! Also because of her, we have little first-aid kits that help us. Clara Barton was a great leader for our country.
Deena Gharibian, 8

If I were to pick any woman past or present to admire the most it would be Rosa Parks. She stood up for what she believed in. She was not afraid to stand up to the police. She and Martin Luther King started a boycott. She got put in jail. Rosa Parks is a real American hero.
