The societal problem of obesity to be discussed
Contributed by: Wendy Grove on 11/15/2007

"Obesity: A Complex Problem Presenting Challenges to the Health Care
Community" will be presented at Glendale Community College on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at noon in Santa Barbara Building room 243.

Dr. Cindy Heiss is the speaker. She is a registered dietitian and professor of biomedical sciences at Missouri State University. She has also been on the faculty at Washington State University and in the California State University system.

Her articles have appeared in several publications. Heiss was a guest on the Oprah Winfrey show twice this year, discussing weight loss from a personal and professional perspective and following two individuals on the show during the year as a mentor for their weight loss.

Heiss will talk about the public health concern posed by obesity and the economic impact faced by communities.

The prevalence of obesity in the U.S. among adults has doubled since 1980. The number of overweight children and adolescents has tripled in that time.

She will discuss the factors that contribute to obesity, why restrictive diets don't work and the strategies to increase the likelihood of successful weight loss for the individual.

The presentation is part of the GCC Science Lecture Series. Admission is free and open to the public.
