Don't miss indie darling Emily Wells
Contributed by: Tracie Jackson on 3/2/2007

She walked away from a major label deal while still in her teens and a few short years later, Emily Wells is being hailed by the Pasadena Weekly as an artist "who flirts with preciousness" and whose "resolutely indie music should appeal to fans of freak-folk and poetic lyrics", likening her work to that ofJoanna Newsom. Wells' new record Beautiful Sleepyhead and the Laughing Yaks, "has some of the best, most well written music and gorgeous female vocals ever," raves Reviewer Magazine. With white fairy lights glowing a halo around her black tangles, wearing yards of crinoline as a petticoat and chatting up the crowd, Emily shuns the demure attitude usually associated with a girl and her guitar or a girl and a piano, and gives the audience powerful performances, keeping them engaged and entertained all the whilst. On Friday, March 9 th, at 8:00pm Emily Wells will play at The Hotel Café, located at 1623 ½ N. Cahuenga Blvd., in Hollywood. The Hotel Café has become a premiere venue in Los Angeles where the likes of Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), Pete Townsend (The Who), Ben Harper and Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine) have taken the stage.

' Beautiful Sleepyhead and the Laughing Yaks', written, produced, recorded, and almost entirely performed by Wells, was created in her studio nestled in a scruffy, hillside neighborhood a few miles from downtown Los Angeles. Each one of the record's fourteen tracks uniquely showcases Wells' mellifluous voice and diverse musical abilities (she plays piano, Hammond, banjo, banjo mandolin, glockenspiel, xylophone, violin, ukulele, and guitar) while still flowing seamlessly together, giving the listener a record that is both a cohesive and cogent piece of aural artistry. Her inspiration for this record was that of "Love, friendship, war, time and the city I love, Los Angeles", Emily reports thoughtfully.

As for leaving behind a lucrative major label deal, Emily smiles sweetly while stating decisively, "I don't regret not having signed with that major. The major labels are having a hard time and it (the label) wasn't the right medium for my work. It didn't allow for the creative freedom that I needed".

In this socio-political climate, Wells found creative control extremely important since two of the tracks on her new record are anti-war songs. Not the type of songs that will be deemed 'the single' by any standards; instead, these are thought provoking and at times simply songs that provoke, plead for answers, demand change and question everyone from the government, to the individual, to the vox populi. Emily explains, "The crux of 1000 Years War is that in spite of it all, in spite of what's happening around the world, most Americans haven't been doing much to change the course of this country's participation in the war on Iraq. I'm not preaching, I put myself in that category. While the countries that are warring, keep killing, with no end in sight".

In the song, Emily sings, "so many flags in the sand, blue and white, greens yellows and reds... don't forget that old red white and blue

what are you fighting for, fighting for a promised land

wandering around in the desert sands

when will it ever end? when will it ever end?

more and more people, never, ever more land.

in spite of it all. in spite of it all you keep on shooting your guns, dropping your bombs,

KILLING ANYONE!

Find out for yourself why everyone is talking about 'indie darling' Emily Wells.
