DOO-WOP ROCK’N ROLL SPRING FLING 2007 CONCERT
Contributed by: Bernadette Pelletier on 3/2/2007

Saturday evening, March 10, 2007, the Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC) Emergency Services Department in conjunction with the LAVC Foundation will be sponsoring the fund raising Spring Fling 2007 concert. This year's concert is "Doo-Wop Rock 'n Roll."
An evening of nostalgia of yesteryear as we listen to the crisp a-cappella sounds of The Mighty Echoes, Southern California's most accomplished vocal group. True brothers in harmony since the 1980's, they have been preserving the doo-wop 'genre-related' oldies of the 1950's and 1960's.

Date:

SATURDAY MARCH 10, 2007

Time:

7:00 pm (Sharp)

Location:

LAVC Monarch Hall Auditorium

Cost:

$15.00( Note: Student & Senior special price: $12.00)

FOR TICKETS CONTACT the LAVC FOUNDATION office,
located in the LAVC Administration Building (818-947-2619).
Check our website @ www.lavc.edu for additional information.

All proceeds from the concert go directly to the LAVC Foundation earmarked for LAVC student scholarships and numerous LAVC related department projects. This past spring (2006), the LAVC Foundation administered and awarded nearly 200 scholarships totaling more than $106,000. We are extremely grateful to donors who establish these scholarships, which ultimately benefit students attending LA Valley College.

The on campus Cadillac Grill will be open at 5:30 pm to support the efforts with food and drinks that will be sold at a nominal fee with proceeds going to the LAVC Foundation.

The Mighty Echoes are Southern California's most accomplished a cappella vocal group. They have performed for President Bill Clinton, entertained at the Super Bowl, and sung the National Anthem at Dodger Stadium. They have been seen on many television shows and played singing firemen in the movie Wilder Napalm with Debra Winger and Dennis Quaid.
Singing together since 1986, they consider themselves true brothers in harmony, preserving the doowop 'genre-related' oldies of the 1950s and 1960s.

Jon Rubin was raised in the raucous Berkeley of the 60s and 70s, left high school to pursue a career as a teen pop star. After scoring several hits with his group, The Rubinoos, Jon appeared on American Bandstand, in many teen magazines, and toured the world. The Rubinoos garnered the coveted Record of the Year Award from England's Music Week magazine for the single "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," which is a staple on many Power Pop collections. He was the newest Echo for 12 years but finally and gratefully passed on that title to another John. His soaring tenor has brought the Echoes wings to lift them to their exalted harmonies.

John Lathan is thrilled to be the newest member of the Doowopsoulphonic Fantastic Four, The Mighty Echoes! Born in South America...(that's Alabama)...near renowned Jefferson County, the world famous birthplace of quartet singing. He grew up listening to the sounds of The Fairfield Four, Wings Over Jordan and Motown. His family moved to Boston where he developed his love for a wide range of musical styles and traditions. He has sung everywhere from the church house to the schoolhouse, the coffeehouse to Broadway, to the Goodwill Games of Moscow where he sang for millions watching around the globe. John's electric performing persona and powerful voice puts the cherry on top of The Mighty Echoes' joyful sound.

Harvey Shield began his career in Swinging London as the drummer in Episode Six, precursors to rock icons, Deep Purple. He traveled the world singing and playing before coming to the States in the mid 1970s. Soon after making L.A. his home, Harvey was signed to Atlantic Records and wrote and recorded "The Way I Feel Tonight" which became an international hit for the Bay City Rollers. He has also composed for musical theatre, movies, the ballet, and has been the music supervisor on several films.
He lives in a Victorian home near downtown L.A. with his wife and his daughter Sofi, who happily share his passion for soccer!

Charlie Davis first heard the sounds of Doo- Wop harmony wafting up from the streets of Manhattan while hanging out of his third floor window on a hot summer night. It blew his 8 year old mind.
Before becoming a Mighty Echo, Charlie was seen on stages across the nation, and was at various times an award winning producer and director, French fragrance executive, art importer, charter captain, ditch digger, Disco light show operator at Xenon, advance man for the circus, voice of God and Satan, and he was Spiderman. Charlie's unique low voice has become the rock solid "Bass" of the Echoes.

Fun is waiting for you at the Spring Fling Doo-Wop Concert. There will be authentic cars of that era on display for your viewing pleasure and poodle skirts a plenty not to mention the many gift certificates that will be raffled during intermission. So come and join us as we carry you back in time to those thrilling days of the nifty 50's and groovy 60's where you can reminisce and relax in the nostalgia of that wonderful era.
