Glendale Community College Verdugo Fire Academy Class X will be holding graduation ceremonies at 6 p.m.Thursday, Aug. 2 in the Glendale Community College Auditorium.
The Verdugo Fire Academy is a California State Board of Fire Services and California State Fire Marshal's certified regional academy. The mission of the academy is to provide education and training that produce a diverse group of students who are the best prepared candidates for employment in a variety of communities, organizations, and fire service careers.
Graduates of the program have completed the California State Fire Marshal's approved firefighter 1 curriculum, which includes more than 500 hours of both academic and hands-on training. Several members of Class X are testing with local fire departments to move towards their dreams of becoming firefighters.
Among the cadets who will graduate from the Fire Academy are four family members, the Delgadillo brothers. Firefighters often describe themselves as one big "family." However, it is unique to see four biological family members graduate together and move towards the family of the Fire Service.
The Basic Firefighter Academy is currently offered as an extended program on weekends to allow working students to attend. The next academy will begin in January 2008.
Monthly orientations for the program will be held on the first Thursday of every month (starting in September) at 7 p.m. at Glendale Community College in AT 229. For additional information, call (818) 240-1000, ext. 5326.
