Implantable medical devices topic of talk

"Implantable Electronic Medical Devices " is the topic of a lecture to be given at Glendale Community College on Tuesday, May 27, as part of the Science Lecture Series.

The lecture will be held at noon in Santa Barbara Building room 243. It is free and open to the public.

The speaker will beformer GCC student Frederick Melikian, who is now engineering manager in neuromodulation and pain management at Boston Scientific.

He will discuss devices that with the advancements in electrical and biomedical engineering, help millions of people live longer, healthier and more fulfilling lives.

Melikian will focus on devices currently available and how they help patients control their heart rhythms, manage their pain, improve hearing and sight and bring diabetes under control.

They include pacemakers, defibrillators, neurostimulators, Cochlear implants, artificial retina, pain therapy and implantable insulin pumps.

In addition to attending GCC, Melikian earned his bachelor's degree in electrical and computer engineering from CSU Pomona. Prior to Boston Scientific, he worked for Minimed, St. Jude Medical, Philips Medical, HP/Agilent Technologies and JPL.
