VHH commits to fire safety
Contributed by: Celine Petrossian on 4/17/2008

Verdugo Hills Hospital (VHH) offers fire extinguisher training to its staff twice a year to ensure that hospital employees, both clinical and non-clinical, can calmly and effectively deal with fires and properly use a fire extinguisher.

On April 16, more than 50 VHH staff members received hands-on fire extinguisher training at the heliport by firefighters from the Glendale Fire Department.

"It is important that our care givers are trained on the use of fire extinguishers because they are the ones who would discover the fire and have a chance to extinguish it while it is still controllable," said Ron Reed, director of hospitality services at VHH. "We are also mandated by The Joint Commission that all first responders to a fire situation be trained on how to properly use a fire extinguisher."

VHH employees found the training to be very useful.

"The firefighters teach you how to use a fire extinguisher and what to do when there is a fire, it's really good information," said Marie Hernandez, MedSurg unit coordinator at VHH. "The best way to learn this is by hands-on."

"This is a good experience because most people haven't handled a fire extinguisher," said Lucy Esterly, quality management database coordinator at VHH.

The next fire extinguisher training at VHH is scheduled for Sept. 24. This fire safety training is organized through the hospital's education department.
