Blog Entry 65 of 78 Grave Concerns: Inside Grand View Memorial Park
News you can use regarding Grand View Memorial Park, Glendale, CA's oldest cemetery, which has been closed for regular business since June 13, 2006, due to legal and financial problems.

Grand View officially an extreme fire hazard area

I stopped by Grand View Memorial Park this weekend to take photos of the grounds through the gates and over the various walls.

Of note is a new sign posted at the front gate that proclaims the cemetery as an official extreme fire hazard area. It also includes a phone number to the Glendale Fire Department that the public can call to report suspicious activities witnessed on the property.

While I was there, a young woman, who preferred to remain anonymous, parked her car in the driveway outside the front entrance to leave flowers for her father who was buried at Grand View four years ago.

"It's so sad, not to be able to go in, but at least I can do this," she told me as she placed the container of mums on the brick wall.

"Everything is dying in there," she added as she looked through the iron bars of the gate that barricaded her father's grave.

"It's just terrible. My family is talking about having him moved, which is difficult to think about," she said.

From what I could see, the grass continues to turn brown, with patches of weeds here and there. Many of the trees are turning brown, and one that I could see appeared to be completely dead.

The majority of the color inside Grand View these days comes from artificial flowers that have been left at previous city-sponsored limited visitations. Although, oddly enough, there are some brilliantly flowering vines growing near the front gates, indicating that there is still some life left in the old girl.

Update 7/31: Daily News reporter, Eugene Tong, alerts us via his blog, East of the 5, that limited visitations are not expected to resume now until some time in September, per the City of Glendale website.
