Blog Entry 27 of 99 Walk beside me
I write about the unsung, the unusual and the wacky going on in a neighborhood near you.

Please feel free to blog about Casitas project
Contributed by: Jason Kandel/valleynews.com   on 1/3/2007

I went to Atwater Village the other day to meet Luis Lopez, a local mechanic who owns a garage under the same name off Fletcher Drive. Lopez is also a longtime community activist, who writes occassionally about his community on his own Internet site. So I encouraged him to post stories about his community onto valleynews.com to help get the word out even further.

We want to hear from Lopez and anyone else who wants to write. It's an open and growing online community. It's fun and it's free.

It would be a great place to weigh in on a proposed 90-unit housing development on Casitas Avenue that I understand is the talk of the town these days. We're all ears.

Be sure to register first. Have fun.

Luis Lopez: auto mechanic, community activist, webmeister, blogger, artist. Luis and his father opened “Lopez Automotive” at 2751 Fletcher Dr., Atwater Village, in 2000. When Luis isn’t greasing something up or tidying up around the place, he devotes time to being a community activist. As one of five Friends of Atwater Village (FAV) boardmembers, he has become the group’s webmeister. Liking a good fight, he has lead FAV’s attacks on Home Depot, a housing development along Casitas Ave., the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council, and officials with the City’s Department of Neighborhood Empowerment. When not doing FAV’s work, he is busy blogging under an alias. As a self proclaimed artist, Luis works in the medium most familiar to him – old auto parts. He fashions images of himself and proudly displays them around the business and on the chain-link fence surrounding the shop’s property. Drive by or stop in and have a look, get an ear full, and perhaps get your tires rotated.
