Tornadoes fizzle but Falcons soar high
Contributed by: Richard Colon on 3/23/2007

Tuesday, March 20, the weather was cloudy with scattered rains off and on across Southern California. The sudden change in weather from the near summer heat of the week before left the feeling that something "bad" might happen. The Indians of John Burroughs High School knew they had to play Hoover High School as if they were the only obstacles in the path to the CIF playoffs. The danger lay in taking the Tornadoes lightly and looking ahead to the Falcons of Crescenta Valley High School. This type of forward thinking has tripped up many teams. So when their game was postponed due to rain and rescheduled for the following day, the Indians knew they would face the Falcons without a day of rest between games.

Against the Hoover Tornadoes, the Indians pitched Lizzie Peters, with Brittni Spear behind the plate. At the top of the first inning, the Indians sent six batters to the plate and easily pushed across two runs. The Tornadoes attempted to mount an offense as they sent four batters to the plate, but at the end of three outs they left two runners on the bags. The 2nd inning was a defensive nightmare for the Tornadoes as the Indians batted around and ultimately had twelve batters score eight runs. Offensively the Tornadoes lacked explosive power and their three batters went down in order. The Indians, leading 10 - 0, seemed poised for another slug fest in the3rd inning as they had eight batters face the Hoover pitcher. However, this time they were limited to two runs. The bottom of the 3rd inning was the momentary spark in the Hoover players as they rallied eight batters and racked up four runs against Peters. Time seemed to slow down as over the next three innings the Indians batted fourteen players, scoring three more runs. The Tornadoes only managed ten hitters, going down in order during the 5th and 6th innings. The end of the ball game brought a clearing of the skies and a victory for the Indians, 15 - 4.

Thursday seemed like a return to summer, with bright sunshine and temperatures in the 80's. The Indians (record of 3-1 overall; 2-1 in conference) were set to face the Falcons (5-1 overall; 3-0 in conference). Jade Terry took to the mound for Burroughs; behind the plate was Katie Budrick (returning from an injury). The Falcons countered with Kali Cancelosi on the mound and Lainey Depompa catching. The first three innings seemed to zip by in record time as Burroughs went down in order and CV managed only two more batters than the Indians (leaving a runner stranded on 2nd base in the 2nd inning). The top of the 4th inning showed promise as Melanie Shelton reached on a single. Shelton never made it to 2nd base as Terry hit to the shortstop, reaching first on a fielder's choice (a quaint way of saying the logical play was to throw out the lead runner - Shelton). The bottom of the 4th inning was a different story for the Falcons as they sent six batters to the plate and managed to score two runs. The 5th, 6th, and 7th innings were a return to the game's beginning as the Indians went down in order. The Falcons managed only one more base runner but did not score again. In the end, the sun seemed to shine on the Falcons as they defeated the Indians 2 - 0.
