March 19 saw the Indians of John Burroughs Highs School take on their first opponent in the Pacific League - Glendale High School. While Burroughs and Glendale have faced off several times over the years, it had been a long time since they were part of the same league.
On the mound for Burroughs was
Lizzie Peters, with
Brittni Spear behind the plate. The first inning started off with the Indians sending seven batters to the plate, pushing across two runs. Glendale responded with fours batters and one run. At the top of the second inning, seven more Indians faced the Glendale defense, this time scoring four runs. During the Nitro's half of the inning, five batters were unable to provide another run. The 3rd inning offered fans the most excitement of the game - Burroughs had five batters add two more runs while Glendale managed to produce two runs with five batters of their own. At the end of three innings the Indians led the Nitros 8 - 3.
The Indians were able to produce additional runs in the 4th and 7th innings while Glendale was unable to add to their own totals. The final play of the game ended with a ground ball hit to
Amanda Collard (third baseman), who then threw to
Esme Sandoval at first base for the final out. Burroughs was able to defeat Glendale 10 - 3.
Next up for Burroughs were the Apaches of Arcadia High School. Starting on the mound for the Indians was
Jade Terry, with
Brittni Spear once more behind the plate. The Indians were facing tough pitching from Arcadia. After three innings, Burroughs was unable to score as six of their nine batters struck out. The Apaches faired only slightly better as twelve batters were able to produce one run, with only one strike out. The 5th inning provided some hope for the Indians. Lead off batter
Kerry Hodgins reached on a single. The next batter,
Liz Hanna laid down a bunt that was misplayed by the defense, allowing her to reach first base while Hodgins advanced to third. The Indians recorded their only run against Arcadia when Hodgins racedhome on a wild pitch. The 4th and 5th innings saw Arcadia send nine batters to the plate, adding one more run to their score. At the end of seven innings of play, Arcadia was able to defeat the Indians 2 - 1. Next up for Burroughs will be Hoover High School, where the Indians will need to turn around their batting.
