Burbank City Council-lies and mischaracterizations
Contributed by: Eric Michael-Cap on 8/23/2006

The first to present his case seems right, till another comes forward and questions him. - Proverbs 18:17 (NIV)

Dear Burbank Community,

In a letter published in Wednesday's Burbank Leader, Alfred Aboulsaad began another personal attack on Dr. David Gordon with the following false statement:

"The Burbank that it seems David Gordon and his faithful supporters such as Eden Rosen and Eric Michael Cap envision is one void of art in public places, community outreach or public transportation. They would prefer a Burbank without a Starlight Bowl, an empty downtown storefront, where Urban Outfitters now lives, one where affordable housing is not a concern and where middle- and high-school conflict-resolution programs would be gutted."

Those of you who know me, including Gordon, know that nothing could be further from the truth! My family and I support the Starlight Bowl and attended the last three season shows including the Burbank Philharmonic and Warner Bros. sponsored screening of "Ant Bully." We shop in downtown Burbank and eat at local restaurants every week. We worship in Burbank at Calvary at the Colony Theater, and have attended and enjoyed numerous community events over the years; from Downtown Burbank concerts and the "Easter Eggsplosion" to Burbank on Parade and National Night Out. We've held home bible studies, feed the homeless on skid row and packed lunches for Burbank Temporary Aid Center.

For the record, I have never made any statements against art in public places, community outreach or public transportation. Aboulsaad's assertion that I and other faithful (Gordon) supporters want to "gut" affordable housing and conflict resolution programs is completely untrue and nothing more than a pathetic politically motivated attack on those who disagree with his opinions. Furthermore, to falsely imply that Eden Rosen, who everyone knows is a champion of low income housing and seniors, is not concerned with affordable housing is sickening and a sad reflection on David Golonski's personal appointee to the Charter Review Committee. Why "The Leader" chose to print such false and defamatory statements is beyond me but I want to set the record straight... I LOVE THIS CITY & COMMUNITY! While I support Gordon, I do not necessarily agree or condone everything he says or does, but I do believe Gordon provides balance and an alternate perspective this City Council needs.

By Mr. Aboulsaad's logic, if you’ve shown allegiance to councilmembers, then you’re in 100% agreement with everything they do unless you publicly scold them? I guess, since he hasn't opposed anything done in the last 13 years by David Golonski, that makes him a disdainful, condescending Charter Review Committee member! As he was personally appointed by Golonski (neglects to mention) whose Council dais attitude towards the community (Home Depot Illegal Alien Day Care Center & 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Airport Development Agreement to name but two items) has been reprehensibly dismissive and earned me a personally vengeful, albeit laughably preplanned, rebuke by Mr. Golonski at a council meeting back in March, Mr. Aboulsaad must harbor the same feelings towards the public. Certainly speaks to his proclivity for ignorantly attacking members of the public like Eden Rosen and Eric Michael Cap in the Leader over items they can so easily disprove, doesn't it? Ah well, like David, like Alfred!

The comment by Alfred below indicates he needs to re-watch the tape of the meeting he refers to, and listen very carefully. There is a difference between expressing concern, and being totally against an entire concept. While he's at it, Alfred might want to go back and check court cases that have been on Council agendas in recent years. You'll find the case numbers printed on the agendas. Some cases can be found at the Burbank court house and are a matter of public record. Everyone might be surprised how some of our tax dollars are being spent. You might even find it could be cheaper to build brand new units to help meet low income housing needs as has been done with many senior projects. Yes, I also endorsed David Gordon and like that he brings up new ideas and doesn't rubber stamp everything.

Let's take a quick look at the logic here, or the lack thereof. People who THINK generally do not agree with anyone 100% of the time. Infact if somebody does agree with anyone, including themself all the time they should perhaps seek therapy. A THINKING person is able to recognize that the best decisions are made with open discussion and debate and when discussion and debate is missing decisions often end up being mistakes.

Nothing in my letter was incorrect! You support David Gordon, you have an endorsement on his website and since you must have missed the City Council meeting where the David Gordon that you FULLY endorsed said that he didn't believe that the city government should be in housing or helping non-profits. You might not support everything he does, but there are set of core beliefs that candidates run on, and is running exactly as he said he would, so when you say that you don't support this or that then you are mischaracterizing your own stances! If you are so endeared to helping non-profits why not write a letter to the Leader that says you don't agree with him on this issue and why? Nah... I know you won't and why not? Perhaps because you might agree with him....?

I take anything in the BLeader with a grain of salt. The same can be said for the Burbank City Follies on Tuesday night.

I did not see the original letter in the Leader, but I appreciate this forum to be able to put forth our position in detail. I agree it's good to have David Gordon on the Council. He stirs things up. I don't always agree with him either, but he looks out for the people of the city. He sometimes makes things uncomfortable at city hall, but that can be a good thing. It is not the job of elected representatives to have an easy time of things, but to hash things out and come to the best conclusion for the majority of the city's residents. If things get a little uncomfortable, that's the sacrifice of service that we can all appreciate.
