Seniors bring a little bit of Hollywood to Burbank
Contributed by: Mark Kellam/valleynews.com on 8/1/2007

A little bit of Hollywood took center stage at the Joslyn Center in Burbank as a group of talented singers, dancers and comics - almost all senior citizens - performed to a standing-room-only crowd.

Marie Burnett, the Retired Service Volunteer Persons (RSVP) representative at the center, put the show together. She been producing and performing in shows at the Joslyn Center for eight years.

"I do two shows a year - one in January and one in July," she said. The January show features acts that sign up for an opportunity to perform. The July show showcases performers who are booked by Burnett.

Burnett, who had a 30-year career in advertising and public relations, had some experience in show business in her early years including appearances on local variety shows such as "Stairway to Stardom."

The "Hooray for Hollywood" show at the Joslyn Center kicked off with some spirited singing and tap dancing by Pam Kay and the Tap Chicks, who got the crowd going with "Anything Goes" and "YMCA," in which Kay and four of the Tap Chicks came out toward the end dressed as the Village People.

Kay said the age range of the group is impressive. "The youngest is 29, which is me," she said, tongue in cheek, with the knowing audience chuckling along. "Our oldest member, Carol (Black), is 84."

Kay then went solo with a banjo and got the audience participating with a few yee-haws during "Good Ole' Mountain Dew."

Herb Coleman got the audience laughing with his comedy and renditions of classic songs, including impersonating both Archie and Edith in the opening song from "All in the Family."

On the more zany side, Joyce Shellie Bergloff and Vicki Burch had the crowd rolling in the aisles. First, they were decked out in short baby doll dresses - completed with ruffled panties - singing "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby." Later, they dressed in Victorian-style dresses and wigs and sang a senior version of "Are You Lonesome Tonight," where they outlined maladies ranging from missing teeth to excessive gas.

The special guest of the event was famous comedian Carl Ballantine, who proved he still had his off-beat sense of humor. He did a "magic trick" where he burned an audience member's $1 bill. It didn't reappear, though. He just burned it and then gave him an IOU.

Dave Cameron, who has a radio show about rock-and-roll music at midnight Saturdays on 88.5 FM, gave a little history lesson about old-time Hollywood.

He recalled the famed Hollywood Hotel. "There was a sign out in front that said 'No dogs or actors,'" he said.

He also reflected on the Old Roosevelt Hollywood Hotel, home of the old TV show "Queen for a Day" and the first Academy Awards ceremony - recollections that brought lots of nostalgic affirmations from many in the audience.

Also on the playbill were Lynn Lowry, who's sultry voice was perfect and her rather racy jokes were a big hit with the crowd. The dapper Tom Thomas sang a big band classic as well as the a smooth rendition of Billy Eckstein's "I Apologize." Helen Eckert put her heart and soul into renditions of "The Man I Love" and "Speak Low."

Closing the show was Burnett, singing "Stormy Weather" as the sun shined through the large window behind her and the smiles from audience members were beaming.

The Joslyn Center's "Hooray for Hollywood" show will air periodically on cable channel 6 in Burbank andGlendale.
